The Breitling Chronomat story started in 1940. Breitling applied for a Swiss patent detailing an innovative circular slide rule to be used with a wristwatch chronograph. The first Chronomats were manufactured and sold in 1941-42. In the 1950’s, the tremendous success of the Chronomat inspired the design of the Breitling Navitimer, a chronograph with its slide rule that was reminiscent of the E6B circular slide rule used by aviators.
The Chronomat has been produced in many forms including the first-ever self-winding chronograph watch in the late 1960’s and even a quartz non-chronograph version in the 1970’s. The Chronomat ceased production in the late 1970’s and reappeared in 1984 as a completely different watch, now designed for pilots. The Chronomat continuies to be one of Breitling’s most popular watches – a history of success and admiration for over seventy years – In recent years, the Chronomat has been Breitling’s biggest seller year after year.
