The Speedmaster revolutionized the chronograph wristwatch. Originally introduced as part of the Seamaster line, this watch was the first to have the now standard layout of 3 counters and a timing scale on the bezel, cementing the Speedmaster’s place as the most famous chronograph ever produced.
Designed as part of a project between OMEGA and Lemania (one of Omega’s subsidiaries at the time), the team’s objective was to design a sturdy, highly accurate and waterproof watch that was reliable, easy to read, and easy to use. These characteristics have come to define not only the Omega Speedmaster, but the entire “sports chronograph” category which was born from the launch of the Speedmaster. The prototype was built at the end of 1956 and displayed to the public in 1957.
The 2000’s have seen the continued diversification of the Speedmaster with the introduction of ladies’ models as well as the continuation of several limited editions. One thing has remained the same — the Speedmaster Professional of today looks very similar to the watch chosen by NASA in 1963, proving that you can’t get better than perfect!
