Learn about preowned watches the WatchBox way with Tim Mosso’s “Wake Up with Watches.” YouTube’s most revealing luxury watch education and entertainment outlet today spotlights the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M dive watch. This is the classic “James Bond” Omega of the 1990s in its latest and greatest guise. Priced at roughly one third the price of a used Rolex Submariner, the Pierce Brosnan-era 007 watch has never offered more substance for less money. Whether you are a veteran luxury watch collector or just window shopping, this is the ultimate online luxury watch safari. The Omega Seamaster Diver 300M was redesigned for 2018 as a 42mm stainless steel dive watch with 300-meter water resistance. The unidirectional diving bezel with ceramic insert was retained from the 2012 iteration, but the new model includes cold enamel infills within the bezel. The Seamaster’s dive clasp was upgraded to match that of the Planet Ocean, and it now includes both a fold-out diving extension and a sliding incremental sizing mechanism. The factory bracelet is more robust than the 1990s original, but it retains the classic hybridized dress watch / sports watch aesthetic. Omega’s Seamaster Diver 300M now includes a colored ceramic dial with the classic and beloved “Omega wave” pattern from the first two generations of the watch. The skeleton hour and minute hands, often described as the “James Bond” hands, endow the watch with delicate detail rarely seen on dive watches. At ten o’clock on the dial, a helium escape valve offers the user a safe means of relieving any helium gas that might accumulate in the watch during saturation dives. Omega fits the Diver 300M with exclusive automatic caliber 8800. Built by ETA solely for Omega, this movement includes a 55-hour power reserve, hacking seconds, and a quickset date. The movement includes an Omega co-axial escapement as envisioned by George Daniels, and the watch is a METAS standard “Master Chronometer.” Caliber 8800 is hardened against magnets thanks to its Si14 silicon hairspring. Omega launched the original Seamaster Diver 300M in 1993. At the time, it was merely the latest in a 45-year series of water-resistant watches sold under the “Seamaster” model name. But the 1993 Seamaster became an all-time great and secured its place in history on the wrist of Pierce Brosnan during his four turns as Agent 007. Initially a quartz Diver 300M in 1995’s “Goldeneye,” James Bond’s personal timepiece stepped up market and appeared as the Diver 300M chronometer starting with 1997’s “Tomorrow Never Dies.” And despite the conclusion of the Brosnan Bond films in 2002, the Seamaster Diver 300M remained a mainstay of the Omega watch catalog. The importance of this permanence can’t be overstated, because today’s iteration of the Diver 300M maintains all of the key design elements from 1993. Now in its 28th year, the “James Bond” Omega Seamaster Diver 300M is the longest-lived Seamaster design since the first “Seamaster” hit the market in 1948. It is, for the first time, more than just a long lasting name; the Diver 300M design has the staying power to warrant comparisons to the evergreen Rolex Submariner. • 37:31 A.
