Greubel Forsey: Hand-finishing, Mechanical Complexity, and Precision with Stephen Forsey

The human capital required to achieve Greubel Forsey’s level of hand-finishing, mechanical complexity, and precision translates to approximately 100 people making 100 watches per year. Greubel Forsey was founded in 2004 by Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey who sought to reawaken and practice hand-finishing techniques to an almost unparalleled level while also innovating on the technical side. They refused the ‘conclusion’ from while they were students of watchmaking that everything had been invented. Fast forward 15 years, and in this conversation with Tim, Stephen Forsey recalls some of their most daring innovations and resultant collections, including the Invention Pieces, Quadruple Tourbillon, GMT, and the Hand Made 1. Upon the occasion of Dubai Watch Week, Stephen sat with the Hand Made 1 in hand as he detailed the extraordinary 6,000 hours work that goes into this timepiece, of which 95% is made using only hand-operated tools.
