Sports watches and dress watches share today’s table, and Tim delivers a full-throated introduction of each example for those who love to buy watches. Rolex Daytonas are common, but yellow gold Cosmograph Daytonas with Rolex Oysterflex straps are rare. Add a black lacquer dial, and today’s Daytona 116519LN is as scarce as it is striking. For those who wish to collect Rolex watches of rarity, there is no finer recent investment opportunity than the 2018 Rolex “Pepsi” GMT-Master with blue dial and white gold case; this pricey Pepsi was built for just one year. Finally, Tim has selected a personal favorite in the white gold Rolex Day-Date with blue “wave” dial and domed bezel. Two Patek Philippe watches with complications share the stage this Sunday morning; a 5170R in rose gold and a 3970P with diamond-set dial steal the show. Patek’s 2016 model year launched this penultimate black-dial Breguet-numeral variant of the red gold 5170 chronograph, and the rose gold Arabic numerals handsomely complement the matching 39.4mm case. The Patek Philippe series III 3970 exhibits the hallmarked lug flanks of early series III 3970s and the baton hands endemic to all third series 3970s. However, the diamond-set dial of this Patek Philippe perpetual calendar chronograph set it apart from the rest of the 3970 family. Grand Seiko, the premium brand of Seiko watches, showcases its finest in the form of two recent models: the “autumn lacquer” SBGH269 and the “Kira Zuri” SBGA385. The 900-piece limited edition SBGA269 includes a warm red lacquer dial that evokes the fall leaves of Grand Seiko’s northern Japan home base, and this dial’s vertical striations recall the warmth of traditional Japanese lacquered wood floors during the cold fall months. The 20-piece limited edition platinum Spring Drive SBGA385 is the rarest of the three “USA edition” Spring Drive watches launched in 2018; its Kira-Zuri or “shiny painting” dial pays tribute to Japanese craft arts while the highly-refined caliber 9R15 spring drive movement boasts exacting +/-10 second-per-month precision.
