Rolex Daytona White Gold: MOP Dial, Full Bracelet & Preowned Watches Explained

Contact tmosso@thewatchbox.com for pricing and availability; Either I have it, or I can get it! The Rolex Daytona takes pride of place at the front of Tim Mosso’s preowned watch extravaganza. Luxury watches from the WatchBox inventory are the stars of the show as Tim explains high horology brands and watches. Swiss precision and European style come together with speed and heritage in our white gold example of Rolex’s famous chronograph. From the 24 Hours of Daytona to the board rooms of New York, the Rolex Daytona is the ultimate power watch. For a watch in high demand, the Rolex Daytona is neither notably new nor redesigned. And that’s the appeal of this sports watch; consistency. When the modern Rolex Daytona arrived with a 40mm case and an automatic movement in 1988, the basic design template for the next 33 years was set. While the 1963-1987 Daytona was considered homely and unpopular, the automatic version became an instant rock star. During the 1990s, no watch in the entire Rolex collection commanded larger waiting lists or greater demand than the Cosmograph Daytona. Rolex made a significant – but invisible – change in 2000. That year, the prior Zenith El Primero based caliber 4030 was replaced by the new Rolex caliber 4130. Unlike the 4030, the 4130 was a true in-house Rolex movement, and it incorporated all the lessons learned with the El Primero. First, power reserve increased from 50 hours to 72 hours. The older tandem of a column wheel and lateral clutch gave way to a column wheel and a modern vertical clutch. A full balance bridge replaced the balance cock, and Rolex added stop seconds (hacking) to permit precise setting. All of this retained the previous reference 16520’s 100-meter water resistance. Today’s show highlights the white gold Rolex Daytona reference 116509. Dimensionally identical to the steel chronograph, the white gold model sets itself apart with a warmer tone under any light and a spectacular mother of pearl dial. The dial, which is crafted from a disc of Tahitian black mother of pearl, radiates colors of the entire visual spectrum as light and angle of incidence vary. Unlike the current steel Daytona 116500LN, the white gold model retains the matching metal bezel. This example is an early “D” serial number produced in early 2005. In addition to the Rolex Daytona, today’s show includes two different models of the Patek Philippe Nautilus, two Patek Philippe perpetual calendars, and independent brand watches from Romain Gautier, F.P. Journe, Daniel Roth, Roger Dubuis, Laurent Ferrier, and Schwarz Etienne. • A.
