SIHH 2018 Day 1 Rewind: IWC, Vacheron, Montblanc, Ulysse Nardin, MB&F, Girard-Perragaux, HYT, DeWitt

Subscribe for more amazing luxury watch content! “Day One” of Watchbox’s SIHH 2018 luxury watch deep-dive began in the new Carré des Horlogers, a collection of the independent watchmakers and independent watch brands that have gravitated to SIHH from Baselworld over the last half-decade. As Baselworld had shrunk, premier independent brands including MB&F, HYT, and (Kari) Voutilainen have found their natural home among peers in the Carré des Horlogers. MB&F led the line with its HM8 MoonMachine 2, a collaboration with Max Busser’s “friend” Stepan Sarpaneva. The MB&F HM8 features a number of Sarpaneva’s signature design cues including his “corona” halo and man-in-the-moon moonphase blazon with… Sarpaneva’s own face. 12 pieces will be offered in each of titanium, blackened titanium, and titanium with rose gold. The MB&F Legacy Machine 2 Split-Escapement was on hand to demonstrate MB&F’s latest interpretation of “retro-futurism” in high horology. HYT joined the fray in 2016, but SIHH 2017 marked the hydro-mechanical watch brand’s first serious set of new model launches at the Geneva venue. HYT launched both the yellow-gold HYT H0 lug-less watch and a lug-less version of its existing HYT H2 model, now dubbed “H20.” Jerome DeWitt marked his brand debut at SIHH with a personal touch from him and his business manager, his wife Viviane. The DeWitt watch brand is undergoing a reorganization and rebirth for 2018, and the Jerome DeWitt took great personal pride in sharing his timepieces led by the new automatic DeWitt Academia Endless Drive, a scrolling time display with power reserve. The brand from Le Sentier enters 2018 with a new model line: Polaris by Jaeger-LeCoultre. The full-line Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris collection launches on 50th anniversary of the original 1968 Polaris – the definitive model – and the 10th anniversary of the limited-edition Tribute to Polaris. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris collection includes the Polaris Automatic, Polaris Date, Polaris Chronograph, and the Polaris Chronograph WT/ World Time. Watchbox Studios is proud to feature all versions of the new Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris collection individually and in a full-family panning shot. Girard-Perregaux wants SIHH 2018 to be remembered as the year of the Laureato. The Girard-Perregaux Laureato Chronograph is the headliner for 2018, but it is by no means alone. The Laureato Automatic Ceramic, the Laureato Skeleton Flying Tourbillon offered diversity of complication and materials. At the head of the class was a world premiere, the Girard-Perregaux Triple-Axis Tourbillon Minute Repeater. The colossal 48mm titanium repeater features exceptional chiming volume and a tourbillon that pivots – simultaneously – on three axis. Appropriately, a grand complication deserves a grand price, and the Girard-Perregaux Triple Axis Tourbillon Minute Repeater commands a cool $400,000 U.S. IWC Schaffhausen marks an anniversary of its own at SIHH 2018. IWC’s 150th Jubilee collection is topped by a flagship complication, the IWC Portugieser Constant Force. The watch, IWC reference 5902-02, features an oversized tourbillon with deadbeat seconds, a constant force mechanism, a 96-hour power reserve, and a moonphase display. The watch, a grand complication, is powered by the manual-wind caliber 94805. As a rarity among rarities, the 46mm platinum IWC Portugieser Constant Force is limited series of 15 pieces priced at roughly $250,000 U.S. It is the rarest and most costly of IWC’s 150th anniversary limited editions. The IWC Portuguieser Chronograph Automatic – the bestselling IWC Portuguese model of all time – receives a comprehensive redesign for 2018. Now designated reference 3716, the Portugeiser Chronograph Automatic gains an IWC manufacture caliber 69355 to replace the former Valjoux 7750. Vacheron Constantin opens its 2018 account with a new entry-level collection dubbed “Vacheron Constantin FiftySix.” All units of the Vacheron Constantin FiftySix collection are automatic, 40mm, and available in either pink gold or stainless steel. The FiftySix collection includes the Date, Day-Date, and Triple Calendar with moonphase. All examples are styled to include a multi-surface dial with a sunburst metallic hour track and a frosted/opaline center dial. Roger Dubuis enters 2018 with a heavy heart and renewed sense of purpose following the late 2017 passing of its namesake founder. The 2017 Lamborghini collaboration continues unabated at SIHH 2018. The Roger Dubuis Excalibur Aventador S is designed to take cues from the V12 engine of the Lamborghini Aventador supercar. Its twin balances are connected via a differential gear coupling that averages and cancels the error from each independent escapement.
