Buying Guides Let It Snow: Watches on Ice

As the winter chill is upon us and snowfall and frost invigorate us with its presence, let’s take a look at some watches that dazzle us with diamonds.

Diamonds are Forever

Precious jems and jewels have always been featured in luxury watches. Over the years, these glittering jewels are finding their way onto dials, bezels and bracelets. Explore these diamond watches from just hour markers to the truly unique.

IWC Portofino Moon Phase 37 Laureus Limited Edition

The IWC Portofino Moon Phase Laureus Edition of 2016 marked the tenth special edition created by the Schaffhausen-based watchmaker as part of its commitment to the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. The watch houses the automatic 35800-calibre movement and has a 42-hour power reserve.

The 2016 Laureus special edition watch features an engraved design by a young girl from Cyprus who won the IWC drawing competition for children and adolescents. Her theme was “Time for Sport,” which shows girls and boys playing with a ball.

Rolex Pearlmaster Oyster Perpetual Day-Date Ref 81299

The Rolex Pearlmaster is Rolex’s crowning jewelry watch. The design showcases uniquely rich dials and exquisite gem settings including diamonds, sapphires or rubies. The Rolex Pearlmaster Oyster Perpetual Day-Date (Ref 81299) features a platinum dial, striking for its silvery whiteness and vibrant luminosity.

Because of the extremely high degree of skill necessary to work with its soft, elastic and highly malleable material, every Rolex dial is painstakingly crafted in-house by fine metalworkers as to ensure perfection. This model is equipped with caliber 2235 self-winding mechanical movement, and successfully passed the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) tests.

Audemars Piguet Diamond Punk Onyx

Our next watch is the audacious Audemars Piguet Diamond Punk watch. This beautiful diamond and black onyx bracelet crafted in 18-karat white gold, hides a secret watch adorned with 300 diamonds on the dial itself. The geometric, pyramid-like studs all over the bracelet are inspired by the punk era. “Snow-setting” the 5,326 diamonds, an artistic technique to mimic the beauty of freshly fallen snow, along with the assembly of the watch, takes the artisans and watchmakers more than 1,440 hours to accomplish. This watch doesn’t come cheap but the beauty and the sparkle warrant the $590,000 pricetag.

Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref. 5719/1G-001

The Nautilus collection first introduced by Patek Philippe in 1976 brought us the design that was inspired by the universal shape of a porthole found on virtually all maritime vessels. Today, the new Nautilus collection showcases a redesign that is casually elegant with a more modern style while preserving its original spirit.

Featured here, this stunningly beautiful 40mm diamond-bathed Patek Philippe Nautilus 5719/1G-001 is fully set with 1675 glittering diamonds, (~8.68 ct). The brilliant, alluring rare stones adorn the dial, bezel and bracelet of this extremely luxurious timepiece. Its round case, bezel and bracelet are made of 18K white gold. The sparkling dial features luminescent hour, minute, and second hands, 12, 6, and 9 o’clock index hour markers, and a rectangular date display aperture at 3 o’clock, completing the extraordinarily luxurious profile of this magnificent timepiece. The movement is a Caliber 324 S C mechanical self-winding movement.

F.P. Journe Élégante 40mm Sertie Calibre 1210

This diamond-feature blog article would not be complete without mentioning the stunningly elegant F.P. Journe Élégante. This revolutionary electro mechanical movement, in development for 8 years, was designed to provide an exceptionally long period of autonomy – 8 to 10 years in daily use and up to 18 years in standby mode. Besides the beauty of this exceptional watch, the most interesting aspect is its impressive F.P. Journe quartz movement. In order to save energy, after 30 minutes without motion, the élégante switches to standby mode and its hands stop turning. Once the watch is picked up to be worn again, it automatically sets itself to the correct time, with the hands taking the shortest path, whether clockwise or counterclockwise.

Featured here is the F.P. Journe Élégante 40mm Sertie Calibre 1210 in 18K red gold case set with 281 brilliant cut diamonds, and centre dial set with 381 brilliant cut diamonds on a karung snake silver rose bracelet.
