Watch and Brand News Introducing: The Breitling Navitimer 8 Collection, Pricing & Specs

Breitling just announced their latest collection inspired by the Huit Aviation Department during World War II. The Navitimer 8 not only honors the brand’s heritage but their role in building chronographic instruments.

Historical Influence of the Navitimer 8

The Huit Aviation Department was set up in 1938 and worked exclusively on the on-board chronographs for the aircraft. The “Huit” in French means 8, a reference to the 8-day power reserve found in the cockpit instruments.

Each of the instruments went through a series of rigorous challenges including extreme temperatures and vibrations before checking the timekeeping precision. Because of this testing, military aviators were attracted to the chronographs.

Design Influence

The new collection is inspired by the design of these on board clocks. This inspiration is specifically found in the dials and bezels. The iconic pilot’s watch Reference 768 with rotating bezel and triangular pointer has also influenced the design of these new watches.

The cases of these watches feature the typical notches on the bezel, seen across the Breitling collection. There is a sporty elegance in the design  with the way the lugs are shaped and the combination of high and satin polishing. The typography on the dial takes inspiration from the first pilot models. Surrounding the dial on the railway minute track you’ll spot small triangles also referencing early models from Breitling.

Each new model is water resistant to 100m with a bi-directional rotating bezel. Depending on the model and movement, these watches will have a power reserve ranging from 40 to 70 hours. These watches boast optimal readability and functionality in design.
